It seems to be the symbol of a healthy person. Whether it’s stories of Elizabeth Holmes or seeing pretty people on TV and the internet, they’re drinking a nondescript, green liquid. But is this drink really a healthful way to get all the vitamins we need?

While juices are great on occasion, the truth is juices (of all kinds, including vegetable juices) remove all the fiber. Fiber, from vegetables and fruit, is of critical importance for our gut health and overall health! When we juice foods, we remove the fiber and are left with a sugary liquid. Tasty? Sure; but the result is spiked blood sugar and sending our bodies into fat storage mode. Yes, even for the “healthy” green juices.

The drinks, which used to be sold almost exclusively by juice boutiques, are now relatively common, popping up in almost every grocery store. This could be a win as it allows us to look at the nutrition facts. When looking at the labels of green juices, we can see they don’t offer any fiber and the net carbs per serving are higher than we want. One brand I looked at had a net carb count of 17g, certainly more than the 9g or less we’d like to see. The result of drinking this juice is a spike in blood sugar, which impacts our metabolic health and virtually every aspect of our health and wellbeing.
