A Bite-Size Read for Your Health and Waistline

What comes to mind when you hear the word focus? Is it the option on your phone that will silence alerts so you don’t get distracted? Is it a flashback to a teacher from childhood scolding you? With infinite distractions today, focus seems to be more and more elusive of a concept. Yet, many of us have a goal we’re working on. Especially in the new year, there are grand commitments that maybe aren’t at the forefront of your mind anymore…dare I say, no longer a focus? In my world as a health coach, I see things a bit differently and perhaps rethinking focus can help you, as it has my clients.

Let’s start by thinking of two kinds of focus; I call them macro and micro. Consider this: what currently occupies your focus? For a lot of you, it’s a weekly or monthly goal. The macro focus encompasses your overall well-being, likely the goal itself. The micro is about the daily choices. I’d be willing to bet, if you’re like my clients, you focus on everything you’re not eating, everything you want to stop doing. Am I right?

In personal development circles a common phrase is “what we focus on expands.” This means that we see more and more of the thing we’re focused on and less and less of other things…frankly everything else. You’ve likely experienced this before, perhaps when buying a car.
