This week we’re talking about Ozempic! It’s quickly becoming a household name as we heard Jimmy Kimmel make a joke about it in his opening at the Oscars, it seems to be all over social media and Weight Watchers has acquired a new telehealth service that connects patients with doctors who can provide medications like Ozempic! Even earlier, in late 2022, I heard about celebrities in Hollywood having Ozempic parties and everyone from Mindy Kaling to Elon Musk was suspected of taking it or a similar drug.

I had clients and podcast listeners asking me about it, so I went digging to understand more. Ozempic was originally designed for Type 2 Diabetics to help lower their A1C, control their blood sugar, and reduce the risk of a major cardiovascular event, such as a stroke or heart attack. While on Ozempic, diabetes patients found that a side effect of the drug was weight loss. Now that this information has been made public, there has been an influx of people paying a lot out of pocket to get their hands on it and similar medications…despite not having Type 2 Diabetes. They want it for weight loss!

To be clear, Ozempic is not (yet) approved for weight loss. There is a medication similar to Ozempic called Wegovy that is approved by the FDA for weight loss…
