“I’ll start on Monday.” “I’ll start over tomorrow.” “I’ll start again on the first of the month.” Sound familiar? We’ve all been there. We think scratch that, clean slate, start over. Whether it’s your 2023 resolution that’s completely slipped your mind by now or your post-holiday/travel food coma clearing, there’s often a desire to start over.

What if I told you, as a health coach, to stop starting over.

Rather, think of everything you’re going to do tomorrow (or on Monday) as simply a continuation. A “keeping going” instead of a “starting over.”

Why is this seemingly subtle shift so powerful? When we contemplate starting over, it implies that we failed. This is patently not helpful. You’re not constantly failing! We’re all trying to live life, to do what we can, and that includes variations in routines and habits, like holidays, work trips, and vacations. When we don’t stick to our ideal plan and afterwards want to start over, there’s an implied shame of the promises to ourselves broken, about not eating better or not keeping up with our activity.

A lot of times, I have clients who come back from vacation and want to do a detox. When they ask me, I recommend against it, unless they’re dead set on it…
