Salad dressings have been made out to be the enemy of weight management. I think there are two sides to this story: we didn’t get “here” because of salad dressing and yet it’s usually a relatively simple swap that can help us build momentum toward health.

Realistically, salad dressings can elevate our meals. At the same time, depending on the type of dressing and how much we use they can also unknowingly compromise our health. Most people tell me they know to avoid creamy dressings because of the calories and fat. But are vinaigrettes always the superior choice? The world of salad dressings is not as black and white as it seems, so let’s delve into some nuances to make more informed choices about what we drizzle on our greens.

Many store-bought salad dressings are full of additives and hidden sugars that do little to support our health. The type and quality of oil used in these dressings plays a significant role in their health impact. Seed oils or vegetable oils, often used in store-bought dressings, can be pro-inflammatory and not helpful to our health goals.
