Whether I’m enjoying them sprinkled on a salad, added to a smoothie bowl or using the juice to make a Sex in The City inspired cocktail, pomegranates pack a punch…of flavor and nutrition! Practically speaking, given the way we eat pomegranate seeds (limited quantity) or drink the juice, what’s the true health benefit?
Pomegranate juice has really become super popular recently! The one I see all the time is the POM Wonderful brand and of the options, I would recommend this one over others because it’s 100% pomegranate juice, as opposed to many others that are cranberry juice cocktail, meaning the cranberry juice is mixed with other juices, added sugar and more. It’s also important to remember that the whole food and the juice are not the same; eating the whole food and drinking the juice don’t offer the same nutritional value.
Compare the nutritional value of a serving of pomegranate seeds to the serving size of pomegranate juice for instance. A serving size of pomegranate seeds is about a half a cup and gives us 72 calories with 16g of carbs of which there are about 12g of sugar and 3.5g of fiber, 1g of fat, and 1.5g of protein. This half-cup serving of pomegranate seeds gives us fiber and a little protein. Whereas a serving of…
