I must admit…I LOVE peanut butter. Earlier in my life (read: in my old dieting days) I was told to be careful with peanut butter. Later as a health coach, I’ve learned a few tricks and tools so peanut butter, while I still love it, is no longer a challenge for me. Nevertheless, I know it is for many. A few years ago, “healthier” peanut butter options joined the many varieties on grocery store shelves, one of which was a powdered peanut butter called PBfit. Is it really possible to get peanut butter from powder and water? Is it really a “healthier” alternative? I stick with my natural peanut butter, but clients ask me about this one so here’s my take…

First, I’ll admit it’s a little strange to me that it’s a powder. I went digging to figure out how they make it. It seems they take roasted peanuts and press them to remove most of the fat (oil), then grind the peanuts into flour. They add other ingredients (we’ll look at them below) and package it up. What stands out to me here, is this process makes this product a processed food.

Next I reviewed the nutrition facts and ingredients. I went to their website and looked at the original PBfit powder. The serving size is two tablespoons. It has 70 calories, 2g of fat, 8g of protein, 6g of carbs of which there are 2g of fiber and 3g…
