When it comes to achieving our wellness goals, we often focus on the big picture: eating healthier, exercising more, and getting enough sleep. Then, most people rely on willpower. Yet there’s more than our own, internal angel on one shoulder, devil on the other, to contend with. Often overlooked are the subtle saboteurs.
These seemingly insignificant factors (ahem, people) can have a significant impact on our progress. Let’s take a moment to think about these sabotaging elements and strategies to overcome them.
Subtle saboteurs can manifest in various ways, unique to each individual. They are the small things that may not appear consequential initially but can have an out-sized impact. For instance, has anyone ever said to you, “you can have it, you’ve been so good”? Subtle saboteurs often sound like well-intentioned friends or family who tempt and entice, often adding a dash of guilt. This happens especially during holiday gatherings. “I made it especially for you!” (ugh, gut punch.) Next thing you know we’re eating Aunt Grace’s triple-chocolate pie.
