Nope, that’s not a typo in the title! Maybe you’ve heard the joke? The “see food diet” — where you see food and eat it. I remember feeling like this. I also felt like I would breathe and gain weight. While it’s light-hearted fun to call it “see food,” if you experience this, it’s often frustrating and can feel like we’re out of control. In my years as a health coach and all the research I’ve done, let’s lift the weight off your shoulders; this is often evidence of something else going on.

Take a little inventory and get curious about what might be off in your body or your habits. I know that sounds daunting but it’s easier than you think. Grab a piece of paper or use the notes app on your phone. When do you notice the “see food” feeling? Is there a certain time of day, a particular event, day of the week? Are there particular actions that make you feel this way?

Next in your note, look at your daily fuel intake. We want to ensure we’re getting enough protein, especially in the morning. Is your diet too restrictive or providing insufficient nutrition? Re-evaluate your food choices to identify what’s missing. You may also be experiencing leptin or ghrelin resistance; these are the hormones that control hunger and satiety. It’s also possible your mineral intake or hormonal balance may be off. Luckily, the first way…
