Cottage cheese had a moment in 2023. If you spent much time on Instagram or TikTok, you likely saw many recipes using cottage cheese and perhaps you saw the viral cottage cheese diet. But what is that? Is cottage cheese really the miraculous answer to weight loss? Someone even asked me recently, is it even cheese?

Firstly, yes! It is a fresh cheese. This means it’s not aged or ripened, and that’s why it has a pretty mild flavor. But that also means it has more lactose than cheeses that are aged, which is good information to keep in mind if lactose is an issue for you. It’s made from the curds of pasteurized cow’s milk, so you can get non-fat, reduced-fat, and regular milk as well as tons of other varieties in the store. You could also make it yourself (if you’re into that sort of thing); the internet is your best friend here, but you essentially have to curdle the milk.

Let’s look at its nutritional value. There’s both casein and whey protein in cottage cheese; the curd is higher in casein. This is also good information for those with allergies or sensitivities as some are better able (or less able) to tolerate cottage cheese compared to other kinds of dairy. If you’re using store-bought cottage cheese, you must read the label to check for added cream…
