Chia seeds’ popularity has grown exponentially in recent years, becoming a household name thanks to its superfood status. I’ve mentioned them in various episodes of my podcast, and recently a friend sent me a post from a big-time influencer. This “expert” said: “chia seeds do not want to be eaten.” After that, I knew I had to give them their time. So, what are chia seeds, what can they offer us, and do they really not want to be eaten?

Chia seeds are native to Central America and were essential to ancient Aztec and Mayan lives. They utilized the seeds not only for nutrition, but for religious, medicinal, and cosmetic purposes (what a range!). Today, we mostly think of them for nutrition. What do they give us?

  • 138 calories
  • 4.7 g protein
  • 8.7g fat, incl. 5 grams are alpha linolenic acids (aka ALA)
  • 11.9g carbs
  • 9.8g of fiber
  • Calcium, Iron, Magnesium, Phosphorus, Zinc, Vitamin B1, and Vitamin B3

All this packed into just 1 ounce (about 2 TBSP).
