I am a stickler for the words we use. Maybe because I had a tutor as a kid who taught me to choose words carefully in every paper…but I digress. As an adult, in personal development and as a health coach I see daily how people neglect to realize the influence of word choice on our subconscious. Perhaps the most important distinction is I am vs. I have. And a critical application of such statements is in health. Hear me out…

In the world of affirmations, it’s said that “I am” statements are the most powerful command phrases. When repeated they take charge of our thoughts and therefore our actions which dictate the outcomes in our lives. (I also discussed this in regard to the word “Don’t” in one of my podcast episodes.)

When someone is struggling with their weight, they usually say “ I am overweight” or “ I am fat.” Doctors will say “you are obese” or “you are diabetic.” Yet, with other disease states, the appropriate phrase is: “I have cancer,” “I have a broken arm,” “I have fibromyalgia.” It’s a subtle and powerful distinction.

Think of your subconscious mind as a garden and your conscious mind as the gardener. Your words are seeds planted in the garden of your subconscious mind. Seeds planted with “I am” are…
